Harrisburg BJJ & Judo Academy Rash Guards
Sometimes you have to design for love.
In the beginning of April Invictus was approached by the owners of Harrisburg Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo to design custom rash guards for the students of their academy. For those of you that don’t know how a rash guard functions, it’s a moisture wicking, light weight, piece of apparel that is worn to provide skin protection and designed to keep athletes dry during training and competition. In the world of combat sports, (in this case submission grappling) it also creates a barrier between your skin and your opponent. These are typically worn under the traditional uniform (Gi) of Jiu-Jitsu practitioners and frequently worn during training and competition of no-gi style Jiu-Jitsu.
Now that the particulars are out of the way, these rash guards also make for a great opportunity to brand your academy and promote your team! Having been a student of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for many years (and currently a purple belt at Harrisburg Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo) I was very excited for this opportunity to combine two of my greatest passions . . . graphic design and Jiu-Jitsu.
The design was inspired by another student at the academy while we were getting ready for class one day. He said “Doesn’t it feel great to put your uniform on? It’s almost like putting on your armor before combat.” That always stuck with me so when I was tasked with designing these rash guards, I approached them as a piece of armor that would honor and protect my fellow classmates. With a nod to the origins of Jiu-Jitsu, the Samurai inspired theme began to take shape into a stylish and functional piece that I hope will promote pride in our academy and provide motivation and courage to the wearer.
